but, do not fear! there is a clear path forward. I need to put the front end of the car on jackstands, disassemble the lower bumper shroud, lay on my back and shove my arm all the way up past the radiator and release the latch by hand.

then charge the battery and hope the car finally starts.

so. the battery in a Ford Focus is tucked up under the cowl and must be slid forward to get out. this requires removing the air box in front of it.

in a fit of misguided optimism, after installing the new battery, i closed the hood. then i discovered the new battery was not fully charged, and did not start the car. and subsequently, i discovered i couldn’t open the hood again.

in removing the air box i inadvertently knocked the hood latch release cable out of its bracket.

and the next challenge.

i was absolutely floored today to find that someone used my ‘tip jar’ in AppendX.

so it either means a friend was kind enough to throw me a few bucks, or a real user found it so useful that they wanted to help out.

either way, i am grateful. ❤️

if i was working right now, i would still have figured out how to make this all happen, but i would be even more exhausted.

almost at the end of week three of (combined) taking my youngest two towns north for school (band) by 7:30am, spending 1.5hrs waiting, coming home, trying to be productive, then taking him even farther to another town for drivers ed in the evening, then spending 2hrs waiting, then home after 9pm.

it’s a gauntlet, but a month from now he’ll turn 16, be done with drivers ed, and be able to take his driving test and then start driving himself to band.

beatiful weather today, but i spent most of my time ... inside.

after my sunroof leak, i took the carpet out so i could bring it to a detailer to be properly cleaned. just got my car back together today. now, waiting for the battery charger since the water leak plus sitting for four (five?) weeks meant the battery was completely dead.

well thinking and talking about this stuff has surfaced a good amount of anxiety that i didn't know i've been suppressing. so that's cool.

@jerzone yeah i've created a project to start exploring marketplace plans. but i hope i won't need that.

really the only thing i'm _worried_ about is that in two months, subsidized health insurance ends and i have to pay full COBRA prices. that means our health insurance suddenly will cost more than our house, food, vehicles, and utilities combined.

today marks 4 months since my last day at work.

i felt like i should write a blog post or something, but what would it contain? let's toot:

- numerous house projects advanced
- shuttling my son to band at school and driver's ed

trying to stay optimistic. having intervals of frustration.

this morning i was wondering why my blog doesn't prompt a ‘Show Reader' button in Safari.

ultimately i ruled out any page structure issues. and i noticed - if you access the URL directly, you see ‘Show Reader.' if you navigate from my blog index or homepage, you don't. UNLESS - you reload the page.

if you have @view-transition { navigation: auto; } in your CSS, Safari fails to display the option for Reader view.

i think right now the only thing that Slack does better than Discord is when you select a word and apply formatting to it (e.g. strike through) Slack does not apply it to the space following the word, while Discord does. this seems like it could be easily corrected.

in my career i’m realizing i did a lot of side quests and as i’m looking for a job i’m finding companies seem to want someone who spent decades replaying the main quest over and over.

my basil plant is a weird mutant but it’s still growing basil. i think it’s at least 10 months old.

Shipped v4.0.0 of markdown-vault-mcp today.

Had a user report their whole vault going dark from a single typo'd note (The files are okay - the tools weren't finding them). Turned out to be two separate crash classes AND a privacy bug (a BOM could silently expose a hidden note). All fixed — one bad file now fails alone, loudly, safely.

the initial release with In App Purchases took 13 days to get through the review process.

this update took about 2 hours.

so, a bit of encouragement if you want to develop an IOS app. initial review is rough, but subsequent reviews are minor.

also, i hope y’all love this. i find it incredibly useful.

in a fit of personal development, i just recycled/disposed of every computer monitor and television box that was in my basement. they overflowed the bed of my pickup truck.

@jerzone ah yes, when i had a tank at another house i actually changed one of those out once. my setup here is straight from the boiler, so i guess the boiler tank is sacrificial. (fingers crossed)

@jerzone yeah most of my house is PEX but downstairs there's a lot of copper in annoying places. electrons are gonna flow where they want i guess. i asked the plumber who fixed my DHW mixing valve on my boiler about bi-metal corrosion, he said basically no matter what metals you use, they all wear out eventually.

@jerzone ah, with my well water mine probably started out thicker and galvanic ate away at it or something. i was trying to use it to replace an elbow that had completely worn through at the outside of the 90

@jerzone i've heard good things about sharkbite as long as the pipe is round and the walls aren't thinning. my problem with trying them was my pipes were paper thin and went oval at the slightest brush
