@zachleat if only sites, in addition to Progressive Enhancement, would also demonstrate Progressive Encroachment: make sure the website is still usable (read: people can still give you money) even if your advertising and tracking scripts do not load (blocked via ad blockers, breaking your fragile javascript loaders, halting all JS on your website)

@eric you can really extend it to them for killing RSS in general. they got everyone dependent on Reader (even 3rd party apps), then killed off Reader. Almost like it was a strategy to eliminate any means for users to discover content without Google being able to track and monetize it

@stubbornella oh wow sounds like you had a terrible ride with this. when it finally got to me, my biggest problem in recovery was endurance. sounds like you’re on the mend, and you have the support to do it in a measured and safe way. good luck, i hope it keeps improving for you.

today i fixed padding issues in HTML emails, then i picked up dog poop with a shovel and a bucket. guess which one i will look back on and regard more fondly.

@irafcummings but the beauty of mastadon is, the ecosystem is wide open for an instance to offer you features like a customizable, transparent algorithmic timeline. and charge some $ for it if it’s useful. and you can choose to use that instance/feature or not.

@sarajw yeah… 27 years later and i still get that feeling. a lot of it for me, is around having approached this industry from the design side, and focusing on the UI/UX layer at the DOM, and generally feeling like i’ve had the rug pulled out from under me as CompSci has taken over. I’ve scrambled to up my javascript (and now typescript!) skills to remain relevant. it’s exhausting.

@sarajw thank you for sharing these moments. i know we all feel them and sometimes i know i get really unkind with myself about it. good for me and others (especially new folks) to hear we’re not alone

the fish tank cabinet. my wife wants to set up a large tank again. a bit ago i picked up a free 8’ tall plywood kitchen cabinet (it was broken on a job site and i fixed it up) i cut it down to size and reinforced it with an inner frame of 1x4 and more plywood. topped with 3/4” plywood that i will be applying tile to this week.

this was a heck of a weekend. while taking a victory lap for making huge progress on my fish tank cabinet project, i went downstairs to find water all over my basement floor — my boiler was leaking.

@beep @fox using AMBOC (Any Modern Browser Other than Chrome) roots out a lot of them, and using an ad blocker finds the rest who don’t hedge against their click tracking ad scripts being blocked
