more progress on my repair panel this weekend. took a while to get the garage up to a temperature where i could spray paint (primer). all that’s left is wet sanding, color, and clear.

@marcamos the drill/driver combo is the first big step. i bought them as a combo and they’re great for different things (the driver is one that converts to an impact-like driver when it has resistance. and you can set 3 levels of “this screw is going in no matter what”)

random: do you ever wish you had a power outlet right in the middle of your garage? if you have an automatic garage door opener - you probably do! hopefully not as cramped as this is in my garage, but some clever plug adapters can help.

a side note. sometimes it feels essential to work on a project like this. my only success criteria is ‘box.’ not ‘pretty box’ or ‘really straight and square box.’ i am the only stakeholder and nobody else is going to care about the outcome.

a quick project this morning while the shop warms up: a plywood box to store some of my heavy/awkward metal working tools. scrap plywood and random screws.

tool notes: that 4” dewalt battery-powered circular saw is my favorite tool i’ve ever used. also, i borrowed my wife’s drill to use for the countersinking bit, so i had drill / drill / driver. it’s amazing how much faster projects go when you don’t have to changeover tools.

@jerzone also cats seem useless to help us deal with the ladybug plague. i’ve seen my cats try to eat them and become instantly and deeply offended. i guess they taste bad.

@cabel oh there’s a limit? yeah i don’t think i’ll never be able to use this product.

@jerzone ah yeah. i took a nap on the couch with the dogs after work, woke up and saw 3” of snow outside and i knew it was warming up overnight

@jerzone i shoveled my driveway yesterday just as it was rising above freezing. snow was super heavy but not yet saturated/slush. i probably could have just left it to melt today but i tend to err on the side of action.

fun design observation:

a JVC car stereo. it’s important to match up the colors of wires so your speakers and controls all work. the manual is printed in black and white, but the box is in color. so they put a wiring diagram on an inside flap of the box, so it stands up where you can see it even!

- trying to do it yourself is a tremendous amount of time
- services will have better equipment than you can afford
- if you’re worried about their quality, send a sample selection first and review before sending more batches

@threetonesun the thought of people advancing in our industry knowing ‘React’ but not knowing foundational javascript is kinda terrifying. i think this is a big part in the ‘library-itis’ problems we experience; people seeking out an npm package for everything including stuff like … math

@irafcummings take some solace in knowing that despite this list of things i did accomplish, i also have another list of projects that i did not complete (or, in some cases, hadn’t even begun). i will judge myself based upon that list of unfinished things, and i will never feel contented.

end of “forgot to use vacation during the year” break, i feel like i’ve accomplished nothing besides
- bought & wrapped gifts
- cooked a bunch of meals
- cut down tree & brought it in to decorate
- enjoyed christmas at home with my wife and kids
- built a wall in my garage to make 1/2 of it into a shop
- installed in my truck: new idler pulley, new tensioner pulley, new grille, new headlights, new stereo
- took the dogs out to play
- slept in late

dang, maybe i’ll do more on my next vacation

is there something you avoid doing because you're too busy?

if you just had some time off at the end of the year, did you do that thing at all while you weren't working?

maybe too busy isn't the only barrier to you incorporating this change.

@kgf i work for IBM Consulting now, we do lots of different stuff. i never really minded React, components make a lot of sense to me. but yeah trying to computer-science it, it gets heavy.

@kgf i was put on a sveltekit project at work and i think i’m getting used to it. it makes sense to me and i can still write CSS/SCSS. still have a lot to figure out though probably.

i picked the wrong day to wear a Weather Company t-shirt. lol.

not sure what i had intended to accomplish today but i took the trash and recycling to the transfer station and then i picked up a truckload of construction material (2x4 studs, plywood) so i guess i have some new projects to work on.

we have reached friday. hard to believe that this week was only five hundred days long
