recently discovered that in the Health app, my Apple devices are recording data and inferring things about my mobility fitness. i wish there was a “Dog Walk” workout option that would omit data for that particular activity.
walk. stop. walk. stop. get pulled sideways. walk. stop. bend over. walk. stop. spin around to untangle the leash. run a little. stumble. stop.
@marcamos i'd really love something like a site with a chronological timeline so you can choose where you like checked-out on new stuff and see everything added since then
so we set our clocks back an hour and now at 5pm it feels like we should have eaten dinner three hours ago and three hours from now it will feel like midnight
@threetonesun will do. i'm also working on porting my wordpress blog to Astro because (well... _gestures broadly_ and) my shared hosting is charging me more because my WP theme is broken with latest PHP version. bleh. just want to be done with all that.
@threetonesun the screenshots tell a bit more of the story, it seems familiar to other site hosting platforms i've used. i figure for (nothing dollars/month) i could give it a go and see if i can make it work. https://coolify.io/docs/screenshots
does anyone i know run Coolify? thoughts/experiences? thinking of spinning up another Linode and migrate my sites over to it (from netlify, and shared hosting)
@film_girl i should probably talk to my doctor about my unease with flying but this usually does the trick and doesn't involve ... talking to my doctor
@jerzone for my kids phones i have the folks at whatever kiosk at the mall install screen protectors. i know it's egregiously expensive but they know what they're doing and i don't. :D
@jerzone oh wow. i haven’t actually broken a phone screen yet but i got a bit of a gouge on this one shortly after i got it. it seems that resistance to shattering and resistance to scratching and inversely proportional
excited to read the m4 macbook pro announcements today. my employer has me on the schedule for a ‘device refresh’ in … (checks notes) 2026. when my intel macbook pro will be seven years past its manufacturing date.
@threetonesun@marcamos i have at times found it frustrating to write in MD when i want like embedded images styled to align left or right, or responsive stuff. i’m beholden to the output of whatever markdown->html parser my blog framework (astro) is using
@m750 when i park in a parking lot, if i can’t pull through (so i can pull out) i will back in.
why? when i’m arriving at the parking lot, i have full situational awareness of what other cars and pedestrians are around me, this makes backing in easier & safer. vs when i’m leaving - i’m usually stuck between a minivan and a giant pickup truck, so backing out is fraught; i have no visibility to the sides as i enter the path of oncoming traffic or people.
it recently dawned on me that when i switched podcast players, away from Castro (which had been acquired and seems to be on life support with no care or attention from new ownership) i chose a new player based on the reputation of the parent company as a do-good organization for the web and the internet. i switched to PocketCasts. owned by... Automattic.
@sarajw if your target browsers all (natively) support a technology, then there has to be a very good argument to reinvent the wheel! now is the time to have those (respectful) arguments.
@sarajw this is a cool opportunity! and it’s your chance to create something lasting and extendable and maintainable. now is the time to think about how a future somebody-else will read and understand what you create.
every huge complicated codebase started out as a small and well-intentioned codebase that got more obscure and confusing with each tough decision that a developer had to make about quality vs. speed. try to push back and advocate for quality when all they ask of you is speed.
my time being thrown at a deadline-challenged project at work is coming to a close. while i look forward to not waking up in a panic every day, i am not excited about being on the ‘bench’ again and watching my utilization percentage dwindle with each passing day.
i see some friends making their way here. things must be getting worse over in that other place, what with the chief executive idiot doing his idiot things.
i’m still more active on mastodon but i’ll try to check in here also.
this is my periodic reminder that if you rely on “Downtime” to regulate your children’s iOS devices, you need to go into Screen Time and verify the “Block at downtime” toggle is checked for them.
this seems to get unchecked for my kids regularly. i assure you that they do not know the Screen Time passcode.
