🤔 so far my cautious, measured, pragmatic approach to using AI agents in software development seems to be reviled by both those who are against AI as well as those who are AI zealots.

@mescutia indeed! on my wife’s side, we have various grandparents and extended fam who worked for Ford. i haven’t bought anything but Fords since 2001. its getting difficult because i want to buy a small to medium sized car soon, and they don’t make cars besides the Mustang anymore.

taken shortly after i got done replacing the APIM in the Escape. we just bought it and in the process of updating Ford Sync from 3.0 to 3.4, someone* bricked the APIM.

* it was me

update: this was fun for a while, but the long-term plan is to have another corporate-issued laptop on a shelf again, so the additional 27" was donated to a better cause (a driving sim rig in the basement)

a while back i was doing a woodworking project and i needed a nailset (used to hammer finish nails to slightly under the surface of the wood without denting the wood with the hammer). i couldn't find one forever. and i have two of them!

when i finally found them both, i also realized - i only have two boxes of finish nails.

so i put a nailset into each box.

this little “summer preview” allowed us to uncover and test the air conditioning to make sure it’s ready when “summer preview 2” or “real summer” arrives.

now we’re back to having the windows open and tomorrow morning it might be chilly enough to use the pellet stove.

it’s been really wild how much of my “identity” i wrapped up with my employer. but now im realizing what the limitations of that were also. i’m free now.

News: my time as an IBMer has ended, after nearly 10 years in Software and Consulting.

I'm looking for new remote opportunities to do UX Architecture, Front-end Dev, Design Systems, or generally bolster teams and contribute to good apps and sites that help people. I have 30 years of experience making things for the web.

I've been building an automated workflow to help me with my search, you can read about it here: mikesusz.dev/blog/job-search/

feel free to reach out or forward, thanks!

so to make this less cryptic, unless something dramatic happens, my run as an IBMer is going to end soon. i was never a really great fit in Consulting; i like to care deeply about my work, to make things better and to be a force multiplier that bolsters those around me. in IBM Software i was able to accomplish this. in IBM Consulting, i am “too expensive” in an organization that emphasizes “fast” and “cheap” more than “good.”

today i received an email that my computer from work is eligible to be upgraded. this is hilarious, as i’ve never received one of these emails before. i started at IBM in 2017. i got a new computer in 2021 when i was laid off and rehired (obviously). i requested an “emergency” replacement last year to upgrade my 2019 intel-based macbook pro. they sent me a used 2020 m1 macbook pro.

given the everything that’s currently happening, this is extra ironic.

just watched The Sixth Sense with my boys. they had not been spoiled. it was amazing to watch them figure it out, like i did 27 years ago.

AI is really great but when you want to find an image on the internet you have to perform seven levels of spongy human brain jujitsu to find a version of a picture that doesn't look like a block-print made with a potato
