i don’t wear it very often, possibly because if anyone asks about it, i have to set aside at least 30 minutes to explain every layer of reference including possibly starting with what a “meme” is.

got the other half of the deck stair railing done this weekend. i still need to install a handrail up and all the way around the deck, but this is a good bit of progress. and now it makes me want to replace the stair treads, four years have been unkind to them (and i neglected to treat them with anything, hesitant because we use these stairs to let the dogs out)

as someone who is now quite firmly out of my 40s, i can say:

if you meet someone in their 50s (or 60s! or older!) who seems like they have their act together and are cogent and aware and witty — that is the result of a LOT of work, or a lot of discipline, or a lot of BOTH. you need to respect that.

i feel like i am at my intellectual apex and there is nowhere to go from here but to follow the diminishing parabola downward.

this weekend i started building good railings on my deck. i altered the layout when we built a patio below, we moved the stairway (that was rotted beyond use) from the end to the middle. and made it 4 feet wide. i’ve had a ramshackle “railing” since then.

by the time I was my kids age, my father had been dead for half my life. I have no useful memories of him and retain no positive influence he had on my life.

I sometimes struggle with how unappreciative my kids are that I am still here and still trying to help them. But of course, they do not possess this frame of reference, so they can’t be grateful. And I have to be OK with that.

but when they’re particularly insolent, it’s tough. really tough.

@jerzone yep. i see it when i’m playing or shuffling my new music playlist most. i think for continuous album playback it may not activate? that could be weird

one interesting feature to watch out for in OS26 on Apple devices is AutoMix. i’ve been enjoying it on ipadOS26 beta. it does pretty deep mixing, especially for EDM and techno. sometimes 30-40 seconds deep into or at the end of songs, it will adjust tempo/beatmatch before cross fading. it’s wild.
watch for “Mixing…” under the progress bar.

i'm having one of those days where i didn't sleep as long as i normally do/would like to, but either it was excellent sleep, or the conditions with which i woke up were ideal. i feel awake and productive and sometime mid-late afternoon i will probably run out of energy and fall over.

the most annoying thing about having apple’s digital assistant in the house is no longer being able to say the phrase ‘in theory’ without triggering it.

@jdarnold i have a big bin in my basement labeled “tech limbo” where i put a bunch of stuff with the idea that if i didn’t use it after a time, i could safely get rid of it.

that was two years ago. i can’t remember what’s in it.

if razer gaming mouse is plugged into mac, modifier keys on external keyboard are ignored via universal control. i don’t think they have a defect priority low enough to assign to this. i’m just curious how the software can get to this state of dysfunction.

sad to say that my woes with external keyboards and universal control continue with ipados26b4. in this screenshot, the v- devices are the ‘virtual’ ones shared from the mac. nebula is a keyboard, proclick is a mouse, and kn01 is a scrolling knob. if i tap/click on any of them, i don’t get the interface to change the modifier keys.

additional annoyance - on the external keyboard, the modifier keys just don’t work if i have the razer proclick mouse plugged in. not even shift or alt or ctrl.

this weekend i started a long-deferred project of replacing the deck boards on our deck (22yo house, they are pretty much cooked). i'm carefully removing the old boards, carefully aligning and spacing the new ones, pre-drilling, countersink boring and screwing down the new boards. it's tedious. i understand why everyone else just nails this stuff.
