so to make this less cryptic, unless something dramatic happens, my run as an IBMer is going to end soon. i was never a really great fit in Consulting; i like to care deeply about my work, to make things better and to be a force multiplier that bolsters those around me. in IBM Software i was able to accomplish this. in IBM Consulting, i am “too expensive” in an organization that emphasizes “fast” and “cheap” more than “good.”

today i received an email that my computer from work is eligible to be upgraded. this is hilarious, as i’ve never received one of these emails before. i started at IBM in 2017. i got a new computer in 2021 when i was laid off and rehired (obviously). i requested an “emergency” replacement last year to upgrade my 2019 intel-based macbook pro. they sent me a used 2020 m1 macbook pro.

given the everything that’s currently happening, this is extra ironic.

just watched The Sixth Sense with my boys. they had not been spoiled. it was amazing to watch them figure it out, like i did 27 years ago.

AI is really great but when you want to find an image on the internet you have to perform seven levels of spongy human brain jujitsu to find a version of a picture that doesn't look like a block-print made with a potato

@akahn very nice! i did this a couple years back. i was on assignment in NYC and the office there had amazing chairs so i found one locally at a used office furniture dealer and picked it up on my way home. still love it (in my case, i have a Herman Miller Mirra 2)

i just wonder how much of my savings i will need to burn through before companies realize that their users require skilled and experienced people to be involved in creating the interfaces that they rely on day to day.

when examining my internal and external prospects for employment, i arrive at a question: who (or … what?) is responsible for producing the user experience in apps and websites anymore?

i predict that, as a user, things are going to get far, far worse. quickly.

@annika yeah this was Grady's point - for Durable software, you either don't use AI, or you use it for very specific tasks and you verify the output. (his entire argument is that you still need knowledge of computer science to produce good software, LLMs are just a new abstraction layer to creating it)

Happy ‘Big Wind’ Day!

on April 12th, 1934, the weather observatory on top of Mount Washington recorded a wind gust of 231mph.

a google search will turn up a lot of various articles, here’s a few — a quick read from the mount washington staff a few years back:

i declare this: Jinx Weekend! put the shovels away, drain the gas from the snowblower. change out the snow tires for summer wheels.

join me! *

* if we all do it, we can’t blame anyone individually when it snows again.

i say this for funnies but i really did explain IP addresses, domain names, and ports to them. the easiest metaphor is a building. a building has an address, a name, and several floors.

this building is at 390 park avenue (ip address)
it's called "lever house" (domain name)
there's a restaurant on the 3rd floor (port 3)
there are offices on floors 4-12 (ports 4-12)

or maybe i just make them watch Hackers again.

a screenshot of the film “Hackers” where the camera flies through “The Gibson” computer, which resembles a city

gave my kids the url to a service i have running in Docker on the server in the basement. they started asking “why does this domain not have a .com" and "what does :8000 mean" so...

@marcamos i asked a tax expert. ;)

1. if you’re involved in a corporation or entity that has to file also, the deadline for that entity is usually march 15th, so therefore any documents resulting from that filing won’t be available earlier.
2. certain retirement investment vehicles allow contributions for the prior tax year up to the filing deadline, so natually any tax documents resulting from those contributions would not be available until some time after the filing deadline.
