@eric you can really extend it to them for killing RSS in general. they got everyone dependent on Reader (even 3rd party apps), then killed off Reader. Almost like it was a strategy to eliminate any means for users to discover content without Google being able to track and monetize it

today i fixed padding issues in HTML emails, then i picked up dog poop with a shovel and a bucket. guess which one i will look back on and regard more fondly.

Oh look I'm logged into Mastodon from my browser and I don't have to worry about this site having creepy tracking scripts and following me around the web.

@sarajw yeah… 27 years later and i still get that feeling. a lot of it for me, is around having approached this industry from the design side, and focusing on the UI/UX layer at the DOM, and generally feeling like i’ve had the rug pulled out from under me as CompSci has taken over. I’ve scrambled to up my javascript (and now typescript!) skills to remain relevant. it’s exhausting.

the fish tank cabinet. my wife wants to set up a large tank again. a bit ago i picked up a free 8’ tall plywood kitchen cabinet (it was broken on a job site and i fixed it up) i cut it down to size and reinforced it with an inner frame of 1x4 and more plywood. topped with 3/4” plywood that i will be applying tile to this week.

a photo of the cabinet i was working on with many clamps holding boards together as glue dries a photo of the cabinet with the inner framing complete a photo of the cabinet with the top installed in the location that it will end up - in the corner of my office where it won’t receive any direct sunlight (sunlight leads to algae growth)

this was a heck of a weekend. while taking a victory lap for making huge progress on my fish tank cabinet project, i went downstairs to find water all over my basement floor — my boiler was leaking.

so the industry has spent a decade turning web development into computer science and now y’all are mad about it? interesting. does that mean i can write real CSS again, or are you still terrified of that?
