how did November get to be the month of terrible expectations? “grow a mustache!” “write a novel!” “stop masturbating!” then at the end you have to travel and deal with your loud, crappy relatives.

@m750 thanks! i’ve been trying to be more open about my depression and anxiety, and seeking treatment and how that’s going. i hope it helps others to seek treatments or solutions.

the toughest part for me is looking back on situations in the past where i was struggling and just thinking… if i had the tools and perspective that i posess today, how much better that might have went.

Sorry there is no great revelation or ‘this one simple tip’ but the lesson i’m trying to convey is - stop, do a sitrep (situation report), identify how you are feeling, consider why, make a change to adjust the climate if needed.

for a long time i wouldn’t take a step back, i would just try to ‘power through’ situations like these, be less effectual than i wanted, and later judge myself for lack of progress.

an anecdote about anxiety and dealing with the world.

yesterday i had a contractor coming over to give us a consultation/estimate. as typical in this situation, i am completely on edge.

the person was nice, the news was as expected, it all went pretty well. after they left i found myself utterly unable to concentrate.

i realized - i still had the adrenaline but now i didn’t have the fear. i was just buzzing.

i needed to reset. for me, that was sit on the couch with the dogs for a while.

this project was a shelf for the window behind our kitchen sink. i think it turned out well. just a 1x4 and a 1x2, biscuit-jointed together, primed and painted. held in place by two pieces of aluminum angle that are set in flush to the ends of the shelf.

a photo of the shelf i made for our kitchen window

final trick-or-treater tally: 4 doorbells, 3 carloads that went around the cul-de-sac and skipped our house. i guess our hill isn’t worth a handful of candy.

i spent this weekend bending clear acrylic tubing for my first custom-loop water cooled PC. i think it turned out pretty well.

a photo of my water cooled PC without the sides on the case so you can see the internal components more clearly a photo of my custom water cooled PC with the sides installed and you can see the components shining through the mesh.

today was a fairly big milestone for me, and i have thoughts. just not sure where to post them. my tech blog is not the appropriate place. perhaps i should revive my main blog that hasn’t been updated in earnest for a decade. do i still remember my wordpress login?

@jerzone i’ve dreamt of a more holistic solution to moving heat around. like in the summer my AC just dumps heat to the atmosphere while i still burn oil to heat my water. it could be put to better use … heating DHW, heating a hot tub, i dunno. of course any of this requires major investment and disruption to implement.

macOS Sonoma off to a great start! initial screen prompting you to choose Sonoma wallpaper or your previous wallpaper, doesn't respond to Tab keyboard controls to confirm the dialog.

@m750 ah well, the well was the key. we get sediment sucked up by the well pump sometimes. the mixing valve on the boiler (that regulates the temperature of hot water by mixing in fresh cold water) was clogged with detritus. i had to open it up all the way (to take full hot from the boiler) and flush it out.
