this really, really needs a timestamp of the most recent fetch, e.g. “up to date … as of Monday Aug 12, 2:34PM”

@jerzone this is awesome. my two boys would probably handle this very differently. my oldest is quite … content? to let others handle arrangements and logistics. my youngest wants to be in charge and already is testing the waters with independence (e.g. how far can i ride my bike? can i ride to the grocery store? the next town?)

also kind of a sad statement on our rail infra and reliability. when i had to work in NYC i drove in. which is nuts, but i couldn’t rely on amtrak to be consistent.

power out again. it must have heard me talking about getting a really good generator this week. (haven’t gotten it yet, but about to spend a lot of money from my phone)

in an old notebook i found my first notes on building Evernote’s “Announcements” system in 2012. it was all driven from their WordPress instance, since they had an int’l team of writers already using it. they wanted announcements to be targeted to any combo of: Product, Sub Level, Platform, Country, Geo Region (e.g. Latin America), interface Language.

i built it with WordPress taxonomies and created a theme that output articles in an XML feed, filtered for the above input criteria. (also: RIP)

a scribbly notebook page where i defined the loops i would make and the criteria used to filter WordPress articles. it ended up working quite well, but ultimately the users didn’t like it much. also Evernote re-organized and laid off all of my contacts there, so i was effectively ghosted with outstanding invoices that never got paid.

when i turned 50, i resolved that i would not behave like a “typical” person who was turning 50.

this was, in fact, something that a person typically tells themself when turning 50.

🤔am i the only one who creates PRs against my repo on my personal site, to review them before approve/merge/deploy? it just feels natural to me.

"at some point, i'm going to have to stop drinking coffee and talking to myself.”

... i said out loud. while refilling my coffee.

being alone in the house is weird for me.

this was a tremendous amount of nostalgic fun to write and research. I now have a list of four or five other posts that I want to make.

my mobile carrier keeps offering me the opportunity to add a second line to my phone for $10 a month. Does anyone really want twice the spam calls to their mobile?

after about a month of using Scroll Reverser ( pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/ ) i'm hooked. (hat tip: @gruber )

my brain has always thought of using a mousewheel and a touchpad gesture as two distinct types of interaction:

my mouse scroll wheel is manipulating the scroll thumb, which slides inversely to the movement of the content.

when i use a touch gesture to move something, i'm interacting with the content directly.

being able to separate these is awesome! tip sent to pilotmoon, well deserved.

i think i've figured out the source of a problem i've been having, i just don't know how to solve it (or report it).

i have two macs and an ipad. i try to use Universal Control. it mostly works. but.

if i have a mechanical keyboard or a small macropad keyboard attached (non-apple keyboard), or a gaming mouse (which has a keyboard device to it, so you can program buttons to keystrokes), then on the remotely-controlled machines, modifier keys don't work. shift/cmd/alt/ctrl. it's ... maddening.

@hotdogsladies in the 90s when i first signed up for BMG i ordered 12 CDs of (various grunge and pop and pop-punk music) and instead of the Green Day disc i had selected, i received Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. i now realize this was probably a frustrated BMG employee who was trying to teach me something, and i very much appreciate it now.
