@m750 consulting. back in the day, i had great friends who were well connected and shifted a lot of fun WP work my way. this was probably the biggest/most complex one that combined WP Admin screen customizations and theme work.

in an old notebook i found my first notes on building Evernote’s “Announcements” system in 2012. it was all driven from their WordPress instance, since they had an int’l team of writers already using it. they wanted announcements to be targeted to any combo of: Product, Sub Level, Platform, Country, Geo Region (e.g. Latin America), interface Language.
i built it with WordPress taxonomies and created a theme that output articles in an XML feed, filtered for the above input criteria. (also: RIP)

@jerzone it seems attached to the physical plant, i’m guessing boilers and a steam distribution system.
was your son a preemie? mine was 14 weeks early.

@jerzone i always admired how many antennas they crammed onto that stack (my son spent 3 months in the ICN up there after he was born)

when i turned 50, i resolved that i would not behave like a “typical” person who was turning 50.
this was, in fact, something that a person typically tells themself when turning 50.

after about a month of using Scroll Reverser ( https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/ ) i'm hooked. (hat tip: @gruber )
my brain has always thought of using a mousewheel and a touchpad gesture as two distinct types of interaction:
my mouse scroll wheel is manipulating the scroll thumb, which slides inversely to the movement of the content.
when i use a touch gesture to move something, i'm interacting with the content directly.
being able to separate these is awesome! tip sent to pilotmoon, well deserved.

i think i've figured out the source of a problem i've been having, i just don't know how to solve it (or report it).
i have two macs and an ipad. i try to use Universal Control. it mostly works. but.
if i have a mechanical keyboard or a small macropad keyboard attached (non-apple keyboard), or a gaming mouse (which has a keyboard device to it, so you can program buttons to keystrokes), then on the remotely-controlled machines, modifier keys don't work. shift/cmd/alt/ctrl. it's ... maddening.

@hotdogsladies in the 90s when i first signed up for BMG i ordered 12 CDs of (various grunge and pop and pop-punk music) and instead of the Green Day disc i had selected, i received Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. i now realize this was probably a frustrated BMG employee who was trying to teach me something, and i very much appreciate it now.

today i drove the Ford Flex to (fill it with gas and) get donuts. then i drove the Ford Ranger to the transfer station and to get propane. then i drove the Ford Focus to get wood-fired pizza. i call this “the trifecta”
mike susz
@mikesusz
@irafcummings i’m trying to get better at this, as well. a lot of what i want to write goes off on tangents and turns into an opus. here’s how i’m trying to get better:
1. make an outline
2. have a file open on the side to capture (new/tangential/related) ideas, so they don’t infect the main piece
3. write the conclusion first. it’s like marking a spot on a map that you want to be the destination.
i’ll let you klnow how this goes.

@m750 yeah i’ve got the generator wiring and interlock all set. i UPS all my networking gear but only get 60-90 minutes out of it. my wife works from home too and she can’t flex time at all, and has to stay on wired ethernet. so i’m leaning towards better generator for now.
mike susz
@mikesusz
@m750 yeah i’m weighing a $1,000 generator, a $5,000 generator, or replacing my ranger with a hybrid f150 w/7.2kw plug in the bed. my current generator was (very cheap and) a snap purchase and it isn’t sine-wave and my electronics don’t like it.
mike susz
@mikesusz
@m750 what does that back up, and for how long?
mike susz

wild line of thunderstorms and we are without power. ironically on one of my recent 3am panic-thoughts sessions, i decided i should just get a better generator now, before “things happen” again.

all the reports i see about Return-To-Office mandates conclude that it’s a bad strategy for morale, productivity, and talent retention.
Yet? all these executives are issuing RTO orders. what are they basing their decision making on? is there any scholarly literature or reports to back their decisions, or is it just some “reckon” based on their internal feelings and/or fears?

pro tips if you have to take a 'profile' photo for work.
1. set up your phone on a tripod or prop it up, higher than your eye line (nobody likes being photographed from low angles)
2. use the timelapse function of your camera to capture a series of frames
3. stand and mug for a while. to get a natural smile, consider how absurd all of this is
4. replay the video frame x frame until you can find one that you might tolerate
5. (optional) give up, throw your phone & computer into the nearest river
