@caseyliss i have our family last name domain set up in google and i can’t use that to administer my kids chromebooks, i had to use my independent solitary google account and set them up with new accounts for their chromebooks specifically. it’s like these two things have completely different sources of record. ditto for adding them to my youtube premium family account - can’t add their family-last-name accounts.
i made a new little helper toy/app to show you the days between today and (a date in the past), and then the same amount of days beyond that. here's 1.0.
okay there are enough of these year-end “wrapped” things, i want in on the action. i'm gonna vibe code an app that connects to my Health data and gives me a year-end wrap up of the medications i've taken.
quick update to my QR code generator today, to add:
- a slider to select the size of the generated output image - (a text box to pick your own size if you're really specific) - error messaging and logic to the interface
@jessamyn the pellet stove in my great room plus a ceiling fan and a circulator fan keep my first floor zone comfortable and even gets up to the second floor if i position the circulator correctly at the bottom of the stairs. if my (24 year old… ) boiler goes, we’ll be looking at something higher efficiency for the baseboard heat and the hot water. being able to isolate rooms would be ideal (my wife works upstairs, has an electric heater for her office, no need to head the whole floor all day)
@jessamyn every ton of pellets offsets about 240 gallons of heating oil for us. in 15 years the stove has paid for itself several times over! not to mention the carbon difference. “trees are a battery for the sun” is a phrase i’ve heard.
okay, NOW this feels like the twitter of old. i just typed out a complaint about something and then deleted it before i posted it. anyway, hi! i hope you are well.
@threetonesun what's maddening to me is... this could be a json file that only gets updated when you add/remove/modify your library. it's absolutely insane that it isn't cached, or even pre-generated on the host
on ipadOS 26.1, Apple TV app 'Home Sharing' attempting to load media library from my mac mini, from within my house. 322 movies. 322 jpeg previews. it's been more than an hour since i took this screenshot, it's still loading, slowly, one at a time. the UI also doesn't display the movie title in plain text, so this is all you get until it loads. it never caches any of this locally.
Apple continues to disrespect media you actually own.
@jsnell it’s one of the things that made me optimistic about the future. and led to me entering IT/web development in the mid-90s. then i saw Hackers. i know it was ridiculous, but i also knew it reflected what was possible. and that was exciting.
i don’t wear it very often, possibly because if anyone asks about it, i have to set aside at least 30 minutes to explain every layer of reference including possibly starting with what a “meme” is.
got the other half of the deck stair railing done this weekend. i still need to install a handrail up and all the way around the deck, but this is a good bit of progress. and now it makes me want to replace the stair treads, four years have been unkind to them (and i neglected to treat them with anything, hesitant because we use these stairs to let the dogs out)
@jessamyn oh wow! yeah not as bad down here. last year we nutrolled and disposed of at least 5 full 5-gallon buckets from within our fenced yard alone.
got one side of the deck stair railing done and realized i didn’t have pressure-treated 2x4 i needed to continue the other side and the hardware store had just closed. looks like it will wait a few more days.
@marcamos oh no. well thankfully the critters who built the nest are far away. hope you can deter your local critters from discovering that sweet warm nest spot in the winter
new tiny side project: i relied on google giving me a qr code generator inline, not just spammy SEO scam websites purporting to 'generate a qr code for free!’ (sign up for newsletters) but now they don’t?
as someone who is now quite firmly out of my 40s, i can say:
if you meet someone in their 50s (or 60s! or older!) who seems like they have their act together and are cogent and aware and witty — that is the result of a LOT of work, or a lot of discipline, or a lot of BOTH. you need to respect that.
i feel like i am at my intellectual apex and there is nowhere to go from here but to follow the diminishing parabola downward.
this weekend i started building good railings on my deck. i altered the layout when we built a patio below, we moved the stairway (that was rotted beyond use) from the end to the middle. and made it 4 feet wide. i’ve had a ramshackle “railing” since then.
